Shaping our area – a consultation response to the Area Vision in the Southwark Plan

The more things change, the more they stay the same. While London Bridge has evolved beyond recognition in the 2000 years since the first Roman bridge, it is still largely defined by the reasons that led to early prominence: a global outlook, the Thames riverfront, a gateway into London, a busy centre of people, food, drink and trade, and more recently (though still developed over 300 years), a renowned centre of health and education.

We are now able to help shape the future of London Bridge - by responding to the consultation for the Area Vision for London Bridge in the New Southwark Plan, including elements relating to specific development sites.

Team London Bridge has developed its response as follow-up to the the London Bridge Plan, published in early 2016, and creating the vision for a ‘globally significant, historic and vibrant place of Modern Commerce, Enterprise and Creativity.

We led a lively debate last Thursday with local partners at the Hive, which demonstrated how passionate people are for heritage and character to be reflected within future development. People wanted to make sure that the riverfront and Low Line continue to evolve as places for creativity, enterprise and enjoyment. And that new development support the creation of vibrant high streets and a green grid throughout the area.

We have pulled these points together into our response, which you can read here.

Still time to respond

While the consultation deadline is formally 28 April, we have been informed that there is a bit of flexibility – so should you wish to comment, please do so next week. We hope that maybe you will agree with some of our points – if so, feel free to use any elements in your response.

Next steps

This work obviously doesn’t stop with a document. We will be continuing to take this work forward, so if you are interested in helping to shape the ongoing change in London Bridge, do get in touch with me.
