by Mark Titchner
Commissioned by Team London Bridge.
Mark Titchner’s new works celebrate the potential to build a better version of the world we had before.
The way we experience and think about our neighbourhoods has changed dramatically over the past few months as we explore them anew. Civic pride and shared responsibility to look after each other and our beloved spaces have contributed to a sense of community strength and solidarity, celebrated in a new series of artworks by artist Mark Titchner commissioned by Team London Bridge now on display around London Bridge and across the capital. This collaboration evolves Mark’s relationship with the area and brings focus to the dynamic cultural identity of London Bridge.
A temporary pop-up poster campaign in collaboration with the BUILDHOLLYWOOD family of Jack, Jack Arts and Diabolical will showcase the 4 new artworks.
“The original concept for this series of artworks was based on the idea of offering a nurturing, reassuring presence as we ease back into our un/familiar streets. However, as I developed the texts for the works, I also felt a sense that this moment – despite all the difficulty – presents an immense opportunity; the opportunity to build a better version of what we had before. As such the aesthetic style of the works shifted away from something soothing towards something bold and celebratory. Reflecting a hope that despite all the challenges so far and those yet to come, we will be together again in the streets we know and love.” - Mark Titchner
On view from 20 November 2020 for at least two weeks, the posters will feature in locations across London Bridge and Southwark, including at the entrance to London Bridge Bus Station on Borough High Street; opposite Southwark Cathedral; and at Vinegar Yard on St. Thomas Street. A selection of all 4 artworks will also be seen across London including prominent sites in the boroughs of Brent, Hackney, Hammersmith & Fulham, Islington, Kensington & Chelsea and Lewisham.
Further artworks have been installed in the London Bridge area. Hope Reveals The World can be found in Newcomen Street by a busy gateway on the Quietway 1 cycle route leading off Borough High Street and opposite the Crol and Co café, while The Sun Rises Bright and Hope Reveals The World are located by the Low Line, in a railway arch between Pizza Pilgrims and Honest Burgers on Bermondsey Street, facing the busy Tooley Street and adjacent to one of the entrances to London Bridge mainline station.
