The MediCinema charity improves the wellbeing and quality of life for tens of thousands of NHS patients, and their families through the power of the shared cinema experience and the magic of film.
Children and adults with acute and long-term health conditions and disabilities experience increased feelings of isolation, anxiety, and stress due to hospitalisation. Time spent in hospital, no matter how short, can have medically recognised detrimental effects on mental and physical health with stress, isolation, and boredom not only lengthening physical recovery but also presenting secondary concerns including impaired immune system, elevated blood pressure, depression, and risks of developing dementia (Ma, R et al., 2019).
In-patients can take a trip to a MediCinema, even while in their beds, wheelchairs, or while using drips or respirators to see the very latest films, 52 weeks of the year in a full-size, custom built, commercial-quality cinema built inside the hospital. MediCinema employ two nurses at every screening and have around 135 volunteers supporting the patients and families.
The MediCinema experience gives patients a mental and physical break from the intensity of the wards and their problems, and enables them to feel connected again to people and the world outside; which improves their emotional, mental, and physical health and aids recovery.
100% of patients agree that MediCinema restores a sense of normality. 55% of patients agree that MediCinema experience helps to reduce feelings of physical pain.
The MediCinema’s are completely free to enter, and not funded by the NHS. MediCinema is completely dependent on funding from the general public, generous business’ and grants from independent funders. Formed and based in Southwark in 1996, the charity manages 5 MediCinema’s around the UK, in London, Glasgow, Newcastle and Newport and has supported over 250,000 NHS patients since it first opened its doors.
