The Old Operating Theatre
Museum & Herb Garret

Housed in the attic of the early eighteenth-century church of the old St Thomas’ Hospital, this atmospheric museum offers a unique insight into the history of medicine and surgery. The original timber framed Herb Garret was once used to dry and store herbs for patients’ medicines and in 1822 an operating theatre was included. Predating anaesthetics and antiseptics, it is the oldest surviving surgical theatre in Europe. Access to the attic is through a narrow 52-step spiral staircase.

Southwark Council

Southwark Council, the local authority for the London Bridge area, has long been at the forefront of Public Health. The council and local campaigners, from Alfred and Ada Salter through to Southwark’s present leadership, have long sought to improve the quality of life for people living in London Bridge, Bermondsey, Borough and beyond, by taking active measures to improve the health of the community.

Today, as the council finds itself on the frontline in the battle against COVID-19, the importance of Public Health has never been greater. The council wants to cement the borough’s reputation as a world leader in medicine and life sciences and this festival will shine a light on the huge range of local success and achievements in the field.

While attracting other similar businesses and institutions to locate here, the council is also continuing to use people-centred planning policies and regeneration, throughout Southwark, as a means to help tackle health inequalities and make the borough a healthier place to live for all of its many communities.
