As more London Bridge workers plan their return to the area over the coming months, many will be considering cycling to work for the first time. At Team London Bridge in particular, we’ve noticed an increase in demand of our cycling services, with more local employees attending our Dr Bike Repair and Marking sessions and many seeking advice on safe routes and cycle parking.

Team London Bridge has long been an advocate for the benefits of pedal power. Our vision, developed with our businesses in our London Bridge Cycling Action Plan, puts cycling at the heart of the ongoing transformation of London Bridge.

While we couldn’t predict the recent turn of events pushing cycling into the spotlight, we are pleased to be able to offer a number of services and support to help make cycling an easier, safer option.

The brand new segregated cycle route across London Bridge is a welcome addition to the area, and we hope to see this linking up with Cycleway 4 on Tooley Street soon. We will continue to work closely with Southwark Council and Transport for London to improve the local cycling network, through the Streetspace for London programme.

Cycling Services

1. Bike Repair and Safety Sessions

We are running a series of extra bike repair and safety sessions in September, to get those brake cables tightened and chain oiled (I imagine a few people are taking old bikes out of the shed, or have a new bike that is squeaking). Each session runs from 8.30am till 12.30 at London Bridge Hive (1 Melior Place SE1 3SZ). Just leave your bike first thing and then pick it up by midday. Dates below and more details here

  •  Monday 21st Sept

  • Wednesday 30th Sept

  • Tuesday 20th October (we run a monthly session on the 3rd Tuesday of each month)

 2. Bike Marking

Police will mark your bike for free through BikeRegister (usual cost £29.99) which helps prevent theft and allows the bike to be returned to you if stolen and later recovered by the police. Do this at the bike repair session (indicate upon arrival if you would like this done) or attend an on-street session, they’ll be running throughout the month – dates and locations here

3. Cycle buddies.

London Cycling Campaign volunteers in Southwark and across London are kindly offering to cycle with you into work to help you get confidence and find a suitable route. You can request a buddy here lcc.org.uk/cyclebuddies (click on Southwark, even if you come from another borough, as you will be coming into Southwark)

4.    Online training

TfL has some quick and helpful online lessons for beginners who want some basic safety tips - click here (you need to sign up). TfLs Active Travel Guidance has lots of other information for businesses and employees looking at getting to work (the training is included here) and four webinars about London travel with their senior directors here.

5.    Webinars for beginners

Our Love Lunch webinar on 30th Sept run by Commuter Cycle Club aims to answer all your questions about where and how to start commuting by bicycle, and get you up and running (or cycling, rather!) in time for your return to the office. Book here

6. Cycle Parking Map

We’ve made a map of public cycle parking in London Bridge, including 40 temporary cycle stands put in by TfL to ensure capacity as more people cycle. For additional security when leaving your bike on a public rack, you should invest in a good lock, and attach front wheel and frame.

Finally, a word of advice from our Placeshaping Director and seasoned cyclist Jack Skillen - “With Autumn on its way, don’t let it put you off. It only actually rains badly during the commute a few times a year. If you have the right waterproof gear and mudguards, the rain needn’t stop you. Get some good lights, some high viz and a bell, and you’re all set.”
