Latest updates for Southwark businesses affected by COVID-19

This Southwark Council bulletin has a reminder for self-employed people about the upcoming deadline for grant applications, a reminder about safe reopening and news of a new mentoring scheme for Black businesses.

For comprehensive information on available support check our business pages regularly.

Last day for Self-Employment Income Support Scheme applications is 13 July

If you are self-employed or a member of a partnership who has lost income since March, and have not yet made a first claim to the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme you have until 13 July to make a claim. After this date you will still be able to make a claim but only for loss of income occurring from 14 July onwards.

Local Authority Discretionary Grants Scheme

We received a huge number of applications to this scheme in the first few days, which is very welcome but means our initial aim of processing each application within 10 working days has not been possible in every case. Extra resource has been allocated and we are working hard to get back to you as quickly as we can.

The fund is currently still open to new applications. Find out more about who is eligible for the grant and how to apply

Business reopening from 4 July

From 4 July, some of the remaining businesses that have been required to close may open, including hair salons, restaurants, pubs and bars, and some leisure facilities. This will be accompanied by further changes to lockdown measures in England.

Temporary changes to the licensing regime for outside tables and chairs are also coming into force to support the reopening of the hospitality industry. We will shortly be publishing guidance for Southwark businesses on how to apply for licences under the new legislation.

Returning to work safely

The government has produced guidance for employers on providing a safe environment for themselves, their employees and customers.  The guidance covers different types of workplace including, pubsrestaurants and hairdressers

This tool helps businesses to carry out a risk assessment and to identify the workplace adjustments that they should make.

TfL has produced guidelines to help Londoners travel safely to and from work.

National guidance remains clear that those who can continue to work from home should do so.

Business mentoring opportunity for business owners who identify as Black

Mentor 300 Black Businesses is a proactive response to the systemic racism Black people face in industry. The mentoring programme is designed for Black business owners to develop the essential skills required to run their business.  Sign up before 3 July 2020.
