Join our mission to recycle 2 million coffee cups in 2020
Did you know 8 million disposable coffee cups are thrown away every day in the UK, with just 4% recycled?
Alongside neighbouring Business Improvement District Better Bankside and recycling experts Paper Round, Team London Bridge have launched a new area-wide recycling programme to help tackle the problem with the aim to recycle 2 million of these cups in 2020. Part of Hubub’s national Cup Fund initiative, the scheme is financed by Starbucks, who introduced a 5p charge on paper cups in 2018 to encourage customers to increase their use of reusable cups.
“While reusable cups are the most environmentally friendly choice, billions of paper cups are still being used each year and most aren’t currently recycled. We know that people generally want to do the right thing with recycling and it was surprising to find that three in four people are still unaware that cups need to be collected separately from normal card and paper.
Gavin Ellis, Director and Co-Founder of Hubbub
The official launch of the project kicked off on January 21st at London's most sustainable venue 15Hatfields. Following an introduction to the initiative, we took a group outing to the riverside to unveil an installation by acclaimed local art duo Mule Studio. Made from 5,555 coffee cups - the number the UK gets through every minute - the installation will be situated on the river walkway (near the Tate Modern) until January 31st, before moving on to other locations, heralding a major push to improve paper cup recycling in high footfall areas across the capital.
