A commitment to decarbonising London Bridge in 2025
With COP29 pushing for commitment at a global scale, and the UK announcing its aim for an 81% cut in its emissions by 2035, we’re proud to be making headway at a local level in London Bridge, supported by the Decarbonisation Charter 2025.
Team London Bridge is working with businesses and partners across the area to make this a sustainable business district and work towards the challenging target in Southwark of being net zero by 2030.
Reaching this target requires collective action. In 2024, 45 businesses and organisations joined forces by signing the London Bridge Decarbonisation Charter, demonstrating their commitment to this shared vision. These businesses included:
A hospital and a university
A hotel, theatre and food and beverage outlets
Law firms
SMEs
Global companies
Developers and building contractors
Building managers and service providers
Waste contractors
A park and landscaping teams
The Council
We are now encouraging new businesses to sign the Decarbonisation Charter for 2025.
If you haven’t signed the Charter before, now is the time to do it. For those that signed a year ago, we invite you to renew your commitment, followed by a review of the progress you made over the last year.
At TLB, we have been working hard with the Net Zero Steering Group members (made up of business representatives across the area) to support the business community through networking and services. This year alone:
We have measured the carbon footprint of London Bridge with through our partnership at xtonnes. Emissions have reduced by 5% from 2019 (baseline) to 2023 and are now 127,000 tCO2e.
About 30 of our businesses have used xtonnes to record their carbon footprint (and this will be available for FREE until April 2025).
20 businesses have done an audit of their energy, freight, waste or supply chains as part of the Southwark Climate Collective
We are launching our ‘Towards Zero Waste’ work
We have been working with major stakeholders to plan for a District Heat Network which could decarbonise our buildings in the future.
We have run a programme of networking and knowledge sharing events as part of the Green Network.
The Charter won the Climate Action Prize at the Association for Town and City Management (ATCM) Awards, and the Net Zero Routemap was nominated for Carbon Strategy of the Year at the BusinessGreen awards
45 businesses have signed the Charter. 65% are trailblazers or champions with a have a net zero target by 2030 or 2050, and many others are making progress.
20 businesses were celebrated at the Net Zero Heroes for their efforts at decarbonising across 8 themes
